Differential

DISASSEMBLY

WARNING: Before beginning any service procedure in this section, refer to Safety Warnings in section 100-00 General Information. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

  1. Refer to: Health and Safety Precautions (100-00 General Information, Description and Operation).
  1. NOTE: AWD shown, FWD similar.

    Inspect the differential bearings for damage or excessive wear. Install new bearings if necessary.
  1. Use a Step Plate.
    Special Tool(s) : 204-069 (T81P-1104-C) Remover/Installer, Front Wheel Hub
    General Equipment : Bearing Separator
  1. NOTE: AWD shown, FWD similar.

    Use a Step Plate.
    Special Tool(s) : 204-069 (T81P-1104-C) Remover/Installer, Front Wheel Hub
    General Equipment : Bearing Separator
  1. NOTE: If replacing the ring gear, it is also necessary to replace the transfer shaft.

ASSEMBLY

  1. NOTE: Do not torque the 4 ring gear bolts.

    Hand-start 4 new ring gear bolts to align the holes in the ring gear and the differential case. Evenly tighten the 4 bolts to seat the ring gear onto the differential case.
  1. Install the remaining 12 new differential ring gear bolts and tighten in 2 stages.
    Torque :
      Stage 1:  33 Nm
      Stage 2:  60 °
  1. Special Tool(s) : 307-587 Differential bearing installer and guide
    General Equipment : Hydraulic Press
  1. Select a new differential shim.
